Knightswood was mostly fields and mine workings until the 1920s. It was beyond the edge of the city and few people lived here.
However, in the 1920s the government decided to build new homes that were ‘fit for heroes’. Each house would have two or three bedrooms, a garden and access to local community facilities.
So, Knightswood as we know it was (mostly) built in the 1920s and 1930s. At that time, with thousands of people re-settling here, most church denominations decided to build new churches in the area. There are various churches in Knightswood, most of which were all established at about the same time.
Knightswood Baptist Church was established in 1929 at Knightswood Cross. As there were so many other churches at the junction, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘holy cross’.
We’ve seen many changes in the area over the years, and we’re still going strong and thriving. We’re proud of our history and thankful for those who established and built the church, and for those who have served over the years. We are privileged to carry on that legacy, and we are excited about what the future may hold for us.
